For the specialist in Spanish sentimental romance this excellent edition and study fills an important gap in the canon. Joyce Boro's thesis has extremely useful information on John Bourchier, Lord Berners, and his social and historical milieu, as well as the multiple sources, both Spanish and French, of his translation of Diego de San Pedro's Cárcel de amor. A close textual study establishes how Lord Berners used editions in both languages to confect his translation, and Boro stoutly defends him against Keith Whinnom's judgement that the translation is scarce worth our time. Although the Spanish specialist will find little that is new in the section about the novela sentimental, Boro's discussion of Cárcel's relationship to counsel literature provides valuable new insights into the work and, because of this relationship, the particular interest which this Spanish sentimental romance would have had in England at that historical period. …
