This complete edition supersedes A. T. Baker's edition of i9io (RLR, 53, 245-396). Baker published only the first part of the work (the Life proper, without the Miracles), and his edition is moreover very unreliable in matters of detail. In his Introduction, D. W. Russell reviews the extant biographical material dealing with St Richard, and in the process gives the correct Latin source of the Anglo-Norman life as that preserved in London, British Library, Sloane MS I772. Baker had assumed the translation to be based on other sources which contain an abridged text, with the result that it has appeared until recently that much more of the French version was the original work of Pierre d'Abernon than is in fact the case. Russell goes on to take a fresh look at the problem of the author's identity - he appears in manuscript sources with the two different by-names Fetcham and Peckham - and brings some new evidence to bear on this vexed question. Following the usual AngloNorman Text Society format, the introduction also contains a description of the manuscript, a succinct study of the language of the poem, and a section on the establishment of the text. …
