Seasons of grace Volume 4 compiled and arranged for solo piano by Paul A. Tate. GIA Publications (G-7956; companion compact disc CD-877)

The fourth volume in this series of piano settings continues to expand the range of resources used by the arranger: hymn tunes, praise songs, personal compositions, and folk songs. The mainstay of this volume of fourteen settings draws from Ordinary Time hymns like "On eagle's wings," "Here I am, Lord," and "How great thou art." They vary in length from about two and a half to five minutes, making them suitable for deeper adoration or communal meditation. A "Wedding suite" is also included, combining the Canon in D of Johann Pachelbel and "Gathered in the love of Christ" by Marty Haugen.

Most selections are of medium difficulty, accessible to pianists with a stable and confident musicianship, and rewarding at all levels. All are intrinsically reflective of the musical character suggested by the lyrics. The musical indications generally describe reverence and contemplation, except holy manna, which is to be played "rhythmically, with energy," and kingsfold, which uses a march-like feeling "vigorously, in two. …
