Miguel is a bit embarrassed by his aunt, Tia Lola, who has come from the Dominican Republic to Vermont to help out his mother. To say that her habits and customs seem a bit out of place in rural Vermont is a bit of an understatement, to say the least! But Miguel learns many important lessons as he grows to know his aunt and her ways. He is surprised at how quickly she makes friends when she cannot even speak English. What is it about her personality that keeps people coming back for more? What special powers does she have that result in Miguel being picked for the baseball team?

As Miguel becomes closer to his aunt, he attempts to teach her to speak English. The result reminds many readers of the literal interpretations with which they have become familiar through the Amelia Bedelia series of books. …
