This volume presents an edition, with facing-page translation into modern French, of the 'post-imprisonment' poetry of Charles d'Orléans and his entourage, as contained in the celebrated manuscript BnF £r. 25459, an<^ omitting only the poems of the 'concours de Blois'. The poetry composed by Charles during his captivity in England is also excluded, so that the edition begins with balade 80, rondeau 13, chanson 83, and complainte no. The substantial introduction surveys Charles's life and poetic corpus, with particular attention to the period covered in the present volume: the importance of dialogue and debate in structuring both individual poems and the collection as a whole, the multi-faceted poetic 'moi', the creation of a new lyric subjectivity marked by feelings of isolation and melancholy, the network of recurring images and tropes that help to unify what might otherwise seem a disparate collection of pieces by numerous different authors. …
