In 1483 Bernhard von Breydenbach, a canon of the cathedral chapter in Mama, accompanied CountJohannes von Solms and a group of German nobles on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and then on to Mount Sinai, and on his return set about publishing an elaborate and learned account of the journey, ürst published in Latin on ii February 1486 and followed by a German edition on ii June 1486. Both editions were accompanied by remarkable illustrations, including fold-outs of some of the great cities visited en route (such as Venice), that were executed by the artist and printer Erhard Reeuwich, who accompanied Breydenbach on the journey. It is generally held that two printed herbals, the Latin Herbarius ç\amnz, 1484) and the German Gnt der Gesundbeit ~\ainz, 1485), whose plant illustrations are in part derived from material coliected on a visit to the Holy Land, are also Breydenbach's work and the product of the same journey. A facsimile of the German Per~gdnatio was published by Andreas KluBmann in aoo8 which, despite certain criticisms that can be levelled at it, has made the work easily available, together with the very signiücant woodcut illustrations. Both the Latin and German editions have been digitized and are available free on-line from the Bavarian State Library. The present edition makes the text available in a diplomatic transcription (regrettablywithout the woodcuts), togetherwith a parallel modern German translation. …
