Article excerpt

Soothing Relaxation Journeys by Amy Clements-Cortes (Narrator), and Sincere Tung (Music). Toronto, Canada: Clements-Cones, 2011.

I am pleased to review Soothing Relaxation Journeys, a new CD by Amy Clements-Cortes and Sincere Tung (2011). Although I must declare a vested interest in its success (it is one of the resources carried by a charity I founded, Room 217 Foundation], I am convinced of its quality. This CD of musical imagery is designed to facilitate relaxation experiences, reduce anxiety and pain perception, improve mood, and enhance comfort during oncology treatments and in palliative care. Soothing Relaxation Journeys may also be a tool for Guided Imagery and Music practitioners and clients. The CD is accessible and flexible enough to be used on one's own or in a therapeutic setting, providing space for trust and the imaging process.

Guided imagery techniques use suggestion to enhance mental imagery. The facilitator provides description, setting, or story to direct the imagination in visualizing a desire or goal. The purpose is to achieve therapeutic goals such as psychophysiological relaxation, alleviation of anxiety and depression, preparation for surgery, and tolerance of procedures.

Guided imagery is an active process that incorporates all senses. The facilitator first asks the listener to imagine something like lying on a beach or looking at a sunset; then the facilitator goes on to describe the sounds, smells, tastes, and other sensations that may accompany the imagined scenario. Through this process, the listener's body seems to respond as though what is imagined is real, and the body may experience sensations and feelings associated with the image (e.g., salivation, letting go, and deeper breathing]. Guided imagery often incorporates background music to help create atmosphere and avoid distractions.

In Soothing Relaxation Journeys, there are four 20-minute episodes or journeys: "Peace and Serenity," "The Colours of the Rainbow," "A Tranquil Sanctuary," and "Healing." Clements-Cortes has written the scripts and is the facilitator of each journey. Her voice is warm and compelling, her tone invitational, and her pacing calm. Images include sunshine, tropical garden flowers, birds, water, eagle flight, animals, trees, the sky, a white dove, and the colours of the rainbow. …
