Lat. 5232), 'Subsidia' al 'Corpus des Troubadours', Nuova Serie 9 (Modena: Mucchi Editore, 2008). 296 pp. ISBN 978-88-7000-544-8. euro35.00. This study of two closely related manuscripts, A and B, was published in 2008, and is most welcome. Italian colleagues (for the most part) have distinguished themselves by not only undertaking studies in graphology but also, in recent years, in returning to the early twentieth-century tradition of providing complete diplomatic editions of manuscripts, along with a rigorous study of their characteristics. It is pleasing to see that there is an ongoing drive to revive this distinguished past by providing a faithful record of the textual content of each manuscript, even in these days of academic penury.

Stefania Romualdi quite rightly stresses the centrality of the codex as a cultural model, taken in its entirety. To use the manuscript as a means of constructing critical editions of individual troubadours is inevitable, but, in some ways, it is a denial of its primary use, in the sense that there is a blurring and even a dislocation of its function in the realization of individual editions. Romualdi's approach to the comparison of these two manuscripts, A and B, naturally emphasizes her work on the latter, because of the existence of De Lollis' well-known publication. …
