Old French Medical Texts, ed. Tony Hunt, Textes littéraires du Moyen Âge 1 8 (Paris: Classiques Garnier, 2011). 286 pp. ISBN 978- 2-8 124-023 9-5. £19.82. Adding to Tony Hunt's evergrowing Hstof publications of previously unedited medieval scientific works, OldFrench Medical Texts moves out of Hunt's usual Anglo-Norman terrain to focus on the edition of a selection of medical texts in continental French found in the Wellcome Library for the History and Understanding of Medicine, MS 546. The volume contains editions of (i) a medical compendium (including, most notably, the 'Lettre d'Hippocrate' as well as excerpts on women's diseases translated from the Trotulan De sintbomatibus mulierum}; (ii) a French version of Gilles de Corbeil's De urinis (actually found in the medical compendium edited in the first section, but presented separately); (Hi) the only known Old French translation of the 'Four Masters' Gloss' of Roger Frugard's Cbiruga; (iv) an abridged Old French version of Jordanus Rufus' De medicina equorum. An edition of the full-length Old French version of this last text has, in fact, previously been edited by Brigitte Prévôt, who rejected the value of the Wellcome copy as a useful witness, and whose published text, Hunt asserts, is 'inadequately edited'. …
