The text edited here by Giovanni Palumbo, though brief - it fills just twenty-three pages in this edition - is fascinating for the very strangeness of the ancient and marvellous past that it conjures up for the city of Amiens. The text, preserved in a single fifteenth-century manuscript and three eighteenth-century copies, was composed by an anonymous resident of Amiens, quite possibly clerical, and claims to be based on a Latin chronicle destroyed in the fire of 125 8, which the author knew from having heard it read aloud. The prologue alludes both to Richard de Fournival and to the clerical community associated with the cathedral as having confirmed the accuracy of the redaction, ultimately implying that it may actually not have been written up until some thirty years after the fire.
