The text that Cropp has edited here encapsulates the complex, multi-layered tradition of the Old and Middle French translations of Boethius' De consolatione Pbilosopbiae. Dating from the fifteenth century, it is a composite text that combines a new translation of the prose passages with a slightly reworked version of the metres taken from the Böece de Confort, translated r.i38o by an anonymous Dominican - itself a reworking of Renaut de Louhans's Roman de Fortune et de Felicité sus Böece de Consolation (1S 3?)· The text is preserved in a single mid-fifteenth-century manuscript. Rubrics demarcate the text and guide the reader through its philosophical arguments; glosses, drawn from the commentary of William of Conches, provide additional explanatory material in four parts of the text. All rubrics and glosses are included in the edition. In addition to situating this particular translation in the larger context of medieval French Boethian translations, and providing an overview of its linguistic and lexical particularities, Cropp supplies five appendices. …
