This excellent edition builds upon those that have preceded it, notably that of Franca Ageno, in 1953, and Franco Mancini, in 1974; indeed, it is based on the text of the Laude prepared by Mancini. It takes full advantage of a fresh and vibrant turn in recent Iacopone Hterary and textual studies, aiming to place the poet fully within his literary, cultural context, and seeks to avoid those critical tendencies that see him as an outsider, an exception, a pa%%o per Christo. lacopone's extraordinary versatility in a poetry full of cross-contamination of genre and form requires a multi-disciplinary approach: his work resists rigid interpretations and places itself deliberately at the edge of poetry, mysticism, theology, and edification.
