This latest volume in the French of England Translation Series presents elegant prose translations of Matthew Paris's Vie de saint Auban and an important Latin source, die Passio sancii Albani, together with colour reproductions of the illustrations executed by Paris to accompany the Vie in the 'Book of SL Albans' (Trinity College Dublin, MS 177, formerly £.!.40), and a wealth of commentary on die texts, their likely patronage and audiences, and the manuscript itself. Noting the contrast between the fine quality of the miniatures and carefully rubricated text, and the inferior vellum of which the book is made, the authors suggest that it may actually have been intended as a model from which more lavish copies could be made for aristocratic patrons. …
