Andiony Bonner has done more to bring the work of Ramón Llull to the attention of English-speaking readers than almost anyone in the past century, notably through his 1985 multi-volume andiology Selected Works of Ramón Llull (1232-1316), his one-volume Doctor Ittuminatus: ? Ramón Llull Reader (Princeton, NJ, 1985, 1993), and his numerous enlightening studies of the vast and frankly confusing corpus that Llull left behind. This new volume, a beautifully produced English translation of the Ars coetanea, is a welcome addition to this body of work. As Bonner makes clear in his introduction, this is not just another thirteenth-century 'autobiography*. It has none of the calculated revisionary, exemplary character of Dante's work, for example, nor the triumphalist tone of a religious polemic. Instead, we have selected periods and incidents chosen largely from the latter period of builts long and active life recounted in the aim of publicizing his Art (here, his Ars brevis) amongst fellow Christians so as to encourage them to support and continue his work following his death. …
