The frequent, pervasive references to music in the work of Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio comprise the primary focus of Marco Cerocchi's book. These references are, he argues, far from casual, but must be seen in the context of a close and powerful relationship between poetry and music. An opening chapter attempts to sketch briefly some introductory, background material ('La concezione della musica nel MCdIOeVo*). The second chapter, 'La funzionalità della musica nella Divina Commedia', explores Dante's use of music, with especial attention paid to Casella in Purgatorio 2. The third chapter, 'Francesco Petrarca, poeta fautore e simbolo di una nuova unione tra parola e musica', begins with a brief historical excursus on the increasing secularization of the fourteenth century and its impact on music; it continues with a discussion of petrarchismo and especially the role of the madrigal, as well as a further excursus on Claudio Monteverdi. …
