'Transfer' is a term that is coming to be used more widely in medieval studies, partly as an adaptation of the 'transferts culturels' used by Michel Espagne and Michael Werner to characterize the French and German eighteenth century in the 19805, by Wolfgang Schmale with reference to the sixteenth century (2003), and more recently taken further in the concept of 'hybrid cultures of the Middle Ages', which provides the tide for a collection by Michael Borgolte and Bern Schneidmüller from 201 o. Balázs Nemes and Achim Rabus have brought together a collection of essays, based on seminars in Freiburg im Breisgau, which explores a view of European history and culture that throws Byzantine studies, Slavonic studies, and the study of French, German, and Italian literature together, using the concepts of cultural contact, cultural transfer, acculturation, and a variety of other perspectives on communication to provide a framework in which writers, texts, and some broader historical phenomena are brought together that are usually kept in their separate disciplines. …
