In December of 2007, David Haas had open-heart surgery. That event and the episodes which followed led him to a new appreciation of the graciousness of God and the fragility of life. Though he states that the texts, tunes and reflections included in this collection are not a response to his heart surgery, one can sense a man with a changed heart creating in a new way.

Haas, a native of Bridgeport, Michigan, is a prolific creator of texts and tunes. This collection continues to demonstrate the skill he brings to his work. Many of the pieces use the responsorial style common in much Roman Catholic liturgy. Though thirteen of the texts are by Haas himself, three utilize texts by other members of The Hymn Society: Mary Louise Bringle, Shirley Erena Murray, and Adam M. L. Tice. The settings are accessible to most congregations. GIA has published choral arrangements for all these pieces.

In the book, Haas places each selection next to a reflection. Using the text, he invites us to consider how the words draw us deeper into a life with Christ. …
