Author William J. Irons (1812-1883) received fame through his poem's connection with Hymn to Joy, used at former U.S. President Ronald W Reagan's funeral in 2004. Composer Schalk wrote the new tune LaGrange, the paraphrased hymn, and this choral setting "in loving memory of the Rev. David L. Smith, commemorating forty-two years as God's servant - Teacher, Pastor, Singer, Saint."

The twenty- measure introduction divides the tune with its accompanying parts in majestic dialog between brass instruments and organ. The brass and organ are treated responsively throughout the whole anthem as well. All voices sing the first stanza in unison with a solid organ part. A one-measure brass interlude prepares the choir to pursue the second stanza alone in a slower tempo and a lower dynamic level (mezzo - piano).
