Metcard is coming

They stand like hungry sentinels ready to claim money, time

and the self-respect of humans waiting a minute into the hour

`Watch your newspapers,' the signs say painted on

blue straitjackets padlocked over steel-hard cases

They are obedient to the premier voice, shredded of

ability to think and act with reason. One commuter

has ripped off a blue bag but the soldier stands

uncommanded, not yet activated. The perfect guard --

no soul, no feeling and no mouth

We have met their brothers and have made way for

them greeting them even in the street. At the auto teller

last week I tried to withdraw 150 dollars twice

`This exceeds your daily limit,' the teller printed silently

across its screen and automatically, without handing over

any cash, deleted 300 dollars from my account

On the day of the half-yearly sales the ATMs joined ranks.

In the city in the morning they gave each customer one

20 dollar note and deleted the rest from their accounts.

In the afternoon each withdrawer received one 50 dollar note.

Australia-wide the ATMs followed suit and this was

not reported in any news media

The sentinel on the tram refused to sell me a zone 2 ticket

until six stops further on when it decided the tram was

now in zone 2. …
