Oct. 30: Ex-IDF soldier Anat Kamm was sentenced to four and a half years in prison after leaking more than 2,000 documents to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz between 2005 and 2007. Of these, 700 were classified and discussed methods of assassination used by Israel to target militants. Kamm's lawyer claimed that she leaked the documents after feeling she had come across evidence of war crimes. [AJE, 10/30]

Nov. 9: A court case against the Israeli army brought forth by Tristan Anderson began in Jerusalem. Anderson, a US citizen, was paralyzed after being shot in the head with a tear gas canister in 2009 while participating in a demonstration against construction of the Israeli separation wall in the West Bank town of Nilin. Dec. 7: Former President Moshe Katsav began serving a seven-year prison sentence. Convicted of twice raping an aide and sexually harassing two other women during his presidency in the late 1990's, Katsav maintained his innocence throughout the trial. [Reuters, 12/7]

Dec. 25: Harassment of an eight-year-old girl in the city of Beit Shemesh west of Jerusalem sparked controversy over the influence of Ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israeli society. Naama Margolese was purportedly scared to walk to her moderate Orthodox temple for fear of Ultra-Orthodox Haredi Jews who cursed and spit at her and others who did not conform to their strict religious code. …
