This CD is an imaginative and creative compilation growing out of Steven Feld's work with the La Trotro (minibus) Driver's Union in Accra (documented in another recent CD and film), together with the group Accra Trane Station. As the CD title suggests, the linking strand in this album is the use of the different types of bells and playing techniques found in Ghana, mostly the gankogui double bell, the dawuro single bell, and the ododompo finger bell. These are combined with a wide selection of other instruments including the bulb lorry horns of the driver's union, saxophone, a Malagasy zither, guitar, Zimbabwean mbira, gonje (fiddle), djembe, parts of a drum set, an invented wind instrument using a double-reed body with a clarinet mouthpiece, and voices. This is an eclectic mix of music made by groups of Ghanaian musicians with wide experience, coming together for rehearsed improvisation. …
