In this special edition of ACR we present the best six papers selected from the International Conference of the Competitiveness Research Network, which took place in Puerto Vallaría, Mexico in November 2011.

The first paper, "The Relationship Between Production Process and Competitiveness Level in Mexican SMEs: An Empirical Study," analyzes the effects of production processes at the level of competitiveness of small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) in Aguascalientes, a small industrial state in the center of Mexico. 125 manufacturing SMEs were analyzed, the sizes ranging from 20 to 250 employees in each SME. The focus was on the development of business strategies that allow the organizations to increase their level of competitiveness.

Our second paper, Organizational Competences and Competitiveness: The Effect of Business Strategies," examines five dimensions of business strategies in order to determine their relation to the creation of competences in a series of processes that impact superior performance within their internal environment (intrategic competences) and a series of processes that lead to enhancing their performance with their external environment (strategic competences), referred to in the paper as intrategic/strategic organizational competence and competitiveness. The sample consisted of 150 companies in the industrial sector of Jalisco, a western state of Mexico.

The third paper studies the nature of the relationship between technological innovation and intellectual capital as factors that help to develop competitiveness. The sample was taken from 250 managers and business owners mainly from the restaurant industry in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara. This city is the second largest in Mexico, and one of the top 10 of the most visited cities in the country, therefore significant variables as a way to improve the competitiveness in organizations pointed out in this paper are of great importance. …
