This is the third issue of the current volume (No. LX) which comprises four research papers dealing with various aspects of South Asian history, its section on current history reproduces popular historical perceptions and thinking over events and personalities. This issue also includes an obituary.

The first paper by Dr. Abdul Rauf (Pakistan) deals with "Religious Education in Pakistan - The Case of Mawlänä Amin Ahsan Islähi". He was one of the leading scholars of the reformative Farâhî school of thought and was once also a prominent leader of the Jamä'at-i Islämi, second only to Mawlänä Maudûdï, the Amir of the Jamä'at. Later due to differences on Jamä'at's participation in political activities and elections, he like some others, resigned from it. The rift proved eventful in the Jamä'at's losing some of its appeal. However, as a scholar educated in a Farähi institution he felt the need of reforming the syllabi of the Dim madâris most of whom continue to follow the 1 8th century Dars-i Niäzämi developed by Mawlänä Nizämuddin Sihälwi in Lucknow (India). Need for its reform requires a debate without rancour and polemics, more so in the present intense situation prevalent in the region. Dr. Abdul Rauf has done well in initiating debate on one of our important educational problems.

The next article by Prof. Dr. Khurram Qadir (Pakistan) is a part of his continuing study and reappraisal of the controversial reign of Sultan Muhammad b. Tughluq.
