This book represents a solid contribution to textbooks available for family violence courses. It advertises a lifespan approach that includes all types of family violence, including physical child abuse, child sexual abuse, child neglect and psychological maltreatment, courtship violence, date rape, and elder abuse. The chapters review rates, historical perspectives on how the problem developed in the profession, theories of explanation, consequences, and treatment and intervention programs. The authors have provided an impressive review of different types of violence and have organized a large amount of research material. Assembling and organizing this bibliography alone contributes significantly to the preparation of students and clinicians.

The beginning of most chapters features a short interview with a prominent scholar in the field. These include Kersti Yllo, Murray Straus, David Finkelhor, Mildred Daley Pagelow, David Wolfe, K. Daniel O'Leary, Lawrence Sherman, Angela Browne, L. Kevin Hamberger, Rosalie Wolf, and Robert Geffner. The interviews, accompanied by pictures, allow students to more closely identify contributions with each author.

Students will easily follow the organization of topics, themes, and questions; long chapters include several intermediate chapter summaries.
