Jan. 21: Hamas Chairman Khalid Mish'al announced that he would be not seek another term in upcoming Palestinian elections. However, Hamas spokesman in the Gaza Strip Fawzi Barhoum claimed that Hamas' Shura Council had the authority to elect members to its politburo regardless of their personal positions. Mish'al did not comment on the motivations behind his decision. [NYT, 1/21]

Jan. 21: Thousands of Palestinians protested a tax hike proposed by Prime Minister Salaam Fayyad. The hike would increase taxes on Palestinians earning more than $53,000 a year from 15% to 30%, and on those earning more than $40,000 a year to 22.5%. The move was an attempt to make the Palestinian Authority (PA) more self-sufficient as donor nations cut back on aid due to the global economic crisis. [AP, 1/25]
