Roger C. Vogel, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, is currently Professor of Music at the University of Georgia. His catalog of musical compositions includes over 100 works, many of which have won various competitions. This song cycle is one of several works with interesting texts for voice with piano and/or other instruments (see his website at uga.edu for a complete listing). Composed in 2002 for colleagues at the University of Georgia and Ellen Ritchey, Instructor of Voice at Gainsville College, Love Letters is a collection of excerpts from love letters of famous, and not so famous, historical figures. In his program notes, the composer states "the excerpts that were selected for this song cycle were chosen to represent many different aspects of the universal emotion of love: from longing, exuberance, excitement, and playfulness to sorrow and despair."
