As a newly admitted student in the University of Minnesota's Masters in Nursing program, I was interested in learning insiders' views of the nursing profession. When I heard about the Nursing Salon scheduled for an evening I had free, I eagerly accepted an upperclassman's invitation to spend time with others in the field. Before going, I researched the background of salons, learning that, as far back as the 17th and 18th centuries, people in French literary and philosophical circles gathered under the roof of an inspiring host to amuse each other and refine their tastes. Coming from the legal profession, which is steeped in rich traditions like the Inns of Court and the Socratic method, I appreciated the historical underpinnings and attended to increase my knowledge of my new profession.

I came away from the salon with a new appreciation for challenges that nurses face as they try to balance patient care with other demands on their time. It also was evident that the gathered group members took a genuine interest in one another, trying to listen carefully to the shared concerns and problem solve together. …
