Today's nursing leaders are challenged to continually improve patient care outcomes in spite of the turbulence in the health care environment. Although nurses are still regarded by the public as trustworthy, steadfast, and essential to patient care, it has become increasingly difficult to address and resolve issues related to quality outcomes and staffing within a complex and politically driven health care system.

The 29 articles in this collection were written by nursing leaders and published in Nursing Leadership Forum since its inception in 1995. Chosen for their scope and breadth, the articles focus on key areas that are relevant to nurse executives and others committed to system improvement. The book is divided into four sections: Getting Started, Developing Leadership Skills, Enhancing Patient and Employee Satisfaction, and Coping with Changing Institutions. Nursing leaders with a wide range of experiences and interests will find the information relevant.

The first section, Getting Started, provides content useful to both novice leaders and experienced nurses who are assuming new roles. Although most articles in this section date from the first two years of publication, the content seems timeless. The ideas are universal and relevant to the issues faced by nursing leaders today.

Section 2, Developing Leadership Skills, is lengthy because the topics require more extensive discussion. The articles "Maintaining the Balance... and Thriving as a Leader" and "Twelve Principles of Successful Fundraising" are of particular interest. The authors provide a cogent discussion of topics not usually discussed in nursing or health care administration texts.
