Scholarly attention to Afro-Colombians, the largest black hispanophone population, is belatedly approaching that of other countries in the region. Nonetheless, some black Colombian musical practices remain overshadowed by the evident musical neo-Africanisms of Colombia's Caribbean and Pacific coasts. This disc documents the black peasantry of Colombia's Andean valleys, the only such recording available outside Colombia. Its publication accompanies renewed scholarly interest in the less canonical, less overtly African cultural and musical forms of smaller black populations throughout the Americas. Indeed, the Cauca Valley string band style, with its spry hemiola, bears comparison to both black 6/8 genres throughout Latin America (as in Mexico's Costa Chica and Gulf Coast) and similar mestizo forms (such as Chilean cueca and the bambuco of the Colombian Andes).

The featured performance, by a family group from the gold mining village of La Toma, is patently down-home. The balanced mix allows the instruments-fiddle, guitars, bombo drum, spoons, and voices-to be easily distinguished from one another. …
