This CD captures the unique sound of the rare terompong beruk ensemble, found only at the village of Bangle in eastern Bali. Of its seven audio tracks, five are pieces from the traditional ceremonial repertoire of the ensemble, while two represent a mixture of terompong beruk instruments and styles with those of the village's more commonly used gong kebyar ensemble. Of particular note are two recordings of "Gelagah manis"-one with the terompong beruk ensemble alone and one with the mixed kebyar/beruk ensemble-which highlight the distinctive timbre produced by the iron-based beruk instruments and the technical differences between beruk and kebyar playing styles. A five-minute video documenting the recording of "Gelagah manis" in Bangle on the beruk instruments provides invaluable visual insight into the playing process. …
