The inscription of the early sound recordings of the Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv into the UNESCO "Memory of the World" programme is most welcome for more than just ethnomusicologists. The early recordings that have become available to a wide circle of scholars and a general audience will certainly contribute to an understanding of the historical changes in the music cultures concerned.
