The idea of putting together a collection of essays on the short story and short story theories originated in two research projects funded by grants from the Regional Ministry of Culture of the Regional Autonomous Government of Castile and Leon (ref. number SA012A10-1) and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (ref. number FFI2010-15063). This research developed into a larger project that outgrew its initial scope and included new scholars who contributed to this subject.

Other friends and colleagues have also assisted by contributing their ideas and encouragement. The editor wishes to thank Consuelo Montes-Granado, Ana María Manzanas, Antonio López Santos and Pepe Mayo for their generous supply of friendship, kindness and humor over these last few years. Special thanks go to Santiago Vaquera, who graciously volunteered to translate Lauro Zavala's essay from Spanish into English, and to Carlos Fortes for his constantly generous help regarding artistic matters.
