Article excerpt

Colonialism 101

a wooden palisade

somewhere in Upper Canada

très fort

Huron and Iroquois lowering

furs heaped like scalps

Special Offer: Will trade pelts for trojan horse

Christianity and Enlightenment thrown in

like bombs

no extra charge

like the woods in Canada

clearcut for new growth

I am monk-shorn

beard and moustache trimmed

grey cross-hatchings on the floor

The years, freshly returned

exhale their bouquet

Behind my glasses, in the rear-view mirror

my eyes take me aback

could be the azure

above a line of pines

the prairie is not in the mirror of the sky

the prairie seeks still water

to admire its pock-marked face

its sometime wafting green tresses

the little flowers in its hair

the sky gazes down blankly

it dreams grey cloud-traces

of lost tribes

the trail of bison

abraham qc

after plain sailing

aspire to the heights

but in the dead of night,

the city's inverse gallipoli:

montcalm, ruffled, fails to see

the wolfe at the door

the sword on the sward.

the mounting appalachians across the seaway!

i turn on the wooden walkway's height

to share the vista -

but giddy liminality

has becalmed you.

pillar of salt, once surefooted,

you sense depths i step over
