Edited by Irene Hermann, Executrix of the Estate of Paul Bowles, and Carole Blankenship, Assistant Professor of Music at Rhodes College (Memphis, TN), these three songs are traditional texts that Bowles set to original music. They were composed in June and September of 1944, probably after Bowles had spent a month in Manzanillo, Mexico. The second song, "Mes de Mayo" appeared in the composer's manuscript in a volume of Bowles songs (Selected Songs) published by Soundings Press, Santa Fe, NM, in 1984, but the first and third songs are published here for the first time. Dr. Blankenship's area of research interest is American song, focusing on the songs composed under the auspices of the Federal Music Project (1935-1940). Her dissertation is titled "The Unpublished Songs of Paul Bowles," and she is currently working on bringing two more sets of songs to publication.

In the preface by Virgil Thomson and the note on Paul Bowles by Peggy Glanville-Hicks in Selected Songs, Bowles's songs are described as light in texture and melodically inventive with light accompaniments and flawless prosody, whether with English or Spanish texts. …
