For decades Elliott Oring has been a cornerstone in the field of folkloristics. His exemplary record of publication, international participation, teaching, and service clearly demonstrates his lifelong commitment to the field of folklore.

Oring's scholarly breadth and depth are boundless and his approach selflessly uncompromising. His commitment to rigorous scholarship and pedagogy are essential for our field's credibility and longevity. I'm sure I speak for many when I acknowledge Oring's influence on my own research and teaching.

Like many folklore students at the University of California, Berkeley, my initial encounters with Oring were through the Western States Folklore Society (previously California Folklore Society) with which Oring has long enjoyed a pivotal association. The annual conference, which we hosted twice during my time at Berkeley, provided an accessible platform into the greater academic and professional world of folkloristics. …
