This issue, Volume 75, number 1, is officially the first edited through the University of Texas office, but I have been busy since February learning the ropes and making decisions on original submissions, as well a few revisions. Due to the efforts of David Demo and his editorial team, I have inherited a journal in remarkably good shape. Most impressively, the impact score is rising and the 2-year impact factor now stands at 2.028, while the number of citations to research published in JMF remains very high, nearly 7,000 cites in 2011. The typical time from submission to decision is 2 months and the lag between acceptance and publication is short. The contributions of the outgoing editorial team are strongly reflected in the collection of articles appearing in this volume. All but one of the brief reports and regular articles were edited out of the University of North Carolina - Greensboro office.

JMF is the leading journal in family studies and publishes research that makes strong contributions to scholarship in many disciplines including sociology, developmental psychology, human development, and demography. My most important goal as editor is to maintain the high standards currently associated with the journal and to provide a forum for groundbreaking and innovative research in family studies. The factors that I weigh heavily in my decisions include the quality of the data and the theoretical or practical contribution of the analysis. I support continued efforts by the NCFR community to increase the representation of qualitative research in the pages of JMF. Last year, the August issue included an informative exchange on qualitative research, and Ralph LaRossa is working with a team to prepare guidelines for the preparation and evaluation of qualitative manuscripts for publication. …
