'Pragmatic literacy' was the formulation pioneered by the first of a series of research projects pursued in Münster (Westphalia) since the 1980s, interdisciplinary in conception and shared by a wide range of disciplines in Medieval Studies, but given special profile by Hagen Keller's work on the impact of writing on social developments in the northern Italian communes in the period from the eleventh to the thirteenth century. The term 'performance' in the title relates to a second phase of the programme, which focused on the intersection of symbolic communication and social values, and is concerned with the circumstances of ceremonial and human interaction in which what has been written down functions in practice. This collection of seventeen essays, in German, Italian, and English, grew out of a colloquium honouring Keller's seventieth birthday in 2007. …
