The common denominators associated with recent mass murders in the United States are guns and mental illness. As federal and state legislators review, debate, and revise firearms laws, it should be noted that improved financing of and access to mental health services are equally important considerations in this dialogue.

This issue's interview is with Kyle L. Grazier, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan. Dr. Grazier discusses the state of mental health services and how the financing of and access to those services is evolving under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act and the Affordable Care Act. In addition, she explains some of the challenges facing health administration education today and offers guidance for anyone considering a career in healthcare management education and research.
