The objectives of Permanent Secretaries heading key Whitehall departments are being published online for the first time as part of ongoing reforms of the Civil Service.

The Government is calling for the Civil Service to be more accountable and efficient by running like a business - in the Civil Service reform plan published last June.

The objectives will now be updated periodically, including when Ministers change, and will enable improved performance management, the Cabinet Office claimed in December last year. It will also publish details of the Secretaries' previous operational and commercial career experience to aid delivery of an expectation that Permanent Secretaries have at least two years of experience in such a role.

"Over time',' said the Cabinet Office, "we will move towards a position where there is a more equal balance between those departmental Permanent Secretaries who have had a career primarily in operational management and those whose career has been primarily in policy advice and development'. …
