The government opened its online appstore, the CloudStore, in February - a project it describes as a "milestone" in plans to drive down the cost of a wide range of technology solutions for public sector organisations.

Embracing the Cloud Computing model means organisations can purchase their IT services on a 'pay-as-you-go' basis, rather than developing their own systems or being locked into long contracts. The service details and pricing information for all suppliers is clearly stated on the website, and no contracts are for longer than a year.

"Simply stated, purchasing services from CloudStore will be quicker, easier, cheaper and more transparent for the public sector and suppliers alike" explained Francis Maude, Cabinet Office minister. …
