Why create and publish a "best of" the Journal of Developmental Education special issue? What niche is it intended to fill or need does it serve?

Literature highlighting quality studies in developmental education is of great need for practitioners and administrators looking to transform and improve their programs, services, and courses. Change is currently being mandated by state legislators and higher education executive offices as well as institutional administrators. Mandates often come from those with little or no historical or intimate knowledge of the field. Many researchers and policy makers who are "new players" claim that research has not been conducted in the field, and they seem unaware that "innovative" concepts and approaches to program design and delivery often have roots reflected in professional archives.

Scholarly periodicals provide essential tools to inform practice at all levels: classroom, program, department, institutional, and system. Submitted manuscripts undergo rigorous review and revision to enhance their quality and accuracy prior to publishing. Therefore, the Journal of Developmental Education is presenting this special issue incorporating Outstanding Article Award winners selected by the Editorial Board: A recent update on the cost of developmental education (Pretlow & Wathington) addresses an ongoing issue in higher education; Bonham and Boylan review initiatives to improve developmental mathematics delivery and outcomes; collaborative learning approaches to build social and emotional competencies along with skill development are outlined (Osterholt & Barratt); Eney and Davidson offer tips for augmenting professionalism of part-time/adjunct faculty; "Refocusing Developmental Education" (Brothen & Wambach) delineates an integrated role for the field within postseconday education. …
