I am grateful t? the American Council of Learned Societies for giving me an African Humanities Program postdoctoral grant that enabled me to spend a much needed Residency at the International Institute for the Advanced Study of Cultures, Institutions and Economic Enterprise (HAS) in Accra, Ghana, in order to revise, update, and publish the original manuscript. Special thanks also to the Ford Foundation's International Fellowships Program, which provided a doctoral fellowship that enabled me to collect this material in Uganda.
