Although it is of comparatively recent vintage as a distinct arena of academic concentration, the field of ethical and legal aspects of aging and the aged is by now sufficiently mature that it has spawned a foundational body of literature on which subsequent exploration and discussion have largely been based. This foundational literature has been collected and published as a single volume in Ashgate's International Library of Medicine, Ethics, and Law series.

The compiler of this volume is Martin Lyon Levine-a major figure in the development of formal inquiry and action pertaining to the intersection of ethics, law, and aging. Besides his own important early contributions to the emerging literature and his long administrative and scholarly service as vice provost and UPS professor in several colleges within the University of Southern California, Levine has served as president of the National Senior Citizens Law Center and founding president and executive director of the Western Center on Law and Poverty.

In this project, Professor Levine has reprinted 52 articles originally published from 1982 to 2004 (with 35 of those selections published in 2000 or earlier) in American and international medical, legal, ethics and philosophy, and social science journals. The selections are organized according to several basic categories: (a) health care in an aging society; (b) decision making by and for older individuals; (c) meeting the needs of older persons in terms of clinical outcomes, health care system responsiveness, and long-term care; and (d) justice for the aged in a world of limited resources and conscious and unconscious ageism. …
