John E. Booty, 1925-2013

As we go to press, we have just heard news of the death of the Rev. Dr. John E. Booty (2 May 1925 - 17 April 2013). John was a former member of the editorial board of this journal and in the years in which he served as Historiographer of the Episcopal Church (1988-2000), an ex-officio member of our Board of Directors. A graduate of Wayne State (B.A.) , the Virginia Theological Seminary (B. D.), and Princeton University (Ph.D.), John served as professor of church history at two Episcopal seminaries (the Virginia Theological Seminary, 1958-67, and die Episcopal Divinity School, 1967-82) and as the dean of a third (the School of Theology of the University of the South, 1982-85).

John's primarily academic focus was on the English Reformation. In researching for his dissertation (published in 1963 as John Jewel as Apologist of the Church of England) , he was able to identify an anonymously published letter ("The Letter of a Certain Englishman," 1561) as a work in which Bishop Jewel developed many of the ideas that would later appear in his An Apology of the Church of England. Booty edited editions of An Apobgy (1963) and the 1559 Book of Common Prayer (1976), and edited a volume of selections from Richard Hooker's Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity (1982). …
