A visual dictionary contains numerous pictures of items with their component parts labeled with the proper names for such parts. The Firefly Visual Dictionary is similar to the former Macmillan Visual Dictionary, and is authored by two of the Macmillan dictionary's contributors (Jean-Claude Corbeil and Ariane Archambault). However, it is much bigger, with more color pictorial entries (6000) and word terms (35,000), and an improved layout.

The pictorials are grouped into 17 main classes, such as Clothing, Energy, Sports and Games. Each main class is divided into from two to 18 subclasses; e.g., Energy is divided into Geothermal and Fossil Energy, Hydroelectricity, etc. Each subclass is in turn divided into a number of sub-- subclasses; e.g., Hydroelectricity is divided into hydroelectric complex, generator unit, etc. This makes it easy to locate a picture of an item and to find a term for it, even though the user does not know the name of the item. …
