Throughout 2012, we focused on our vision for the future of The Hymn Society and ways to invigorate congregational song through our resources and programming. Emerging out of our "dreaming sessions" are a number of new initiatives for the future, but one of those initiatives is already starting to take shape. The Ambassadors Program, sponsored jointly by The Hymn Society and Choristers Guild, is aimed at providing resources and networking links for undergraduate music majors. Our recent Lovelace Scholars have pointed out that though students may be planning on a career in performance or music education, it is likely that they will also find themselves working in a church. They will need resources that the two sponsoring organizations can provide. Even more important our young leaders want to encourage music majors to consider church music as their career.

In mid-January, Brian Hehn and Ginny Chilton, both former Lovelace Scholars, led the first Ambassadors Program workshop at Wingate University with twenty undergraduate music students attending. During the Saturday workshop the leaders shared their own stories about their call into church music ministry and led presentations on worship, the impact of architectural space on the worship experience, and Choristers Guild compositions for worship. The participants also had the opportunity to do some worship planning. Small groups were given segments of a worship service and asked to find appropriate hymns and congregational songs for those portions of the service. The participants had the opportunity to learn more about The Hymn Society and Choristers Guild and to sign up for a year's free membership in both organizations. Most took advantage of the offer! …
