The pages of Praises Abound abound with vivid and sometimes unexpected images: "God's listening breath," "dear Christ, our Mother," tourists spontaneously singing "For all the saints" in a Russian monastery, the Trinity inviting us to "Love's dance," God is asked to "explain away your quietness, O Lord," and powerful new questions are added to those found in "Were you there when they crucified my Lord?"

Every entry is unique. Written over a period of 30 years by students of the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest, each one brings a new voice and form. All were written in response to the same class assignment: to write an original hymn text or a meditation on a hymn already written. While all are deeply theological, the voices are by turns analytical, philosophical, poetic, didactic, and evocative. Some are intensely personal meditations reflecting on favorite hymn texts, while others are new hymns meant for singing aloud together. Some can stand alone; others require the Episcopal Hymnal 1982 for reference. …
