Experiencing Hildegard: Jungian Perspectives (expanded and revised) by Avis Clendenen. Wilmette, 111.: Chiron Publications, 2012, 271 pp., $24.95, ISBN 978-1888-860258-6.

It has been only three years since Avis Clendenen's Jungian approach to Hildegard of Bingen appeared. In it, she invited the reader to enter into Hildegard's world from Carl Jung's point of view and even to compare the thinking of the two. It isn't hard to see how rich the writings of Hildegard are for this sort of study. She explored how Hildegard approached some archetypal images, the unconscious, the soul, and the feminine divine among other things, comparing them with Jung's theories. Throughout the book there are quotes, suggestions for reflection and application, and even color plates, making it interesting to the professional and the non-Jungian reader. The work was competent and thought-provoking.

So why a revised edition already? The answer is that important things have been happening in the world of Hildegard studies. According to the author it has been "thoroughly updated" and, more importantly, it contains two new chapters. One is of note for the fact that it is actually a reworking and expansion on an article that appeared originally in Magistra. It is entitled "Hildegard, Jung and the Dark Side of God."

The real news, however, is the recent canonization and declaration of Hildegard as a doctor of the Church. …
