The Conversation in Albuquerque

The Nursing Salon is a gathering of nurses-young and old-who join together in a conversation about nursing. The salon provides a chance for communication regarding individual perspectives on nursing today. It uses the conversation that springs from the question, "What's on your mind about nursing today?" As the particpants respond, themes arise. Sometimes it's a global issue; other times a specific incident or patient becomes the focus. While I was a nursing student, I participated in salons with the founder of the concept, Marie Manthey. Being involved in a conversation with RNs from many aspects of the field was a terrific adjunct to my classroom and clinical education.

As a new graduate of the University of Minnesota's Masters in Nursing program, I was eager to bring Nursing Salons to my hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. I held the salon at my home, with the help of Marie Manthey, who introduced the 11 attendees to the format of the salon. As we gathered in my living room, there were conversations between students, floor nurses, nurse managers, and four "sages" who started their nursing vocations in the 1940s. After an informal meal, the participants got to the heart of the salon, responding to the ideas that emerged from the check-in question, "What's on your mind about nursing today?" The evening's conversation ranged from reminiscing about "the way it was" to deploring the minutia of paperwork and computer charting, eventually giving way to reflecting on our own motivations and aspirations about nursing. We listened as one participant progressed from talking about the disconnection between the corporate mission and the reality of bedside nursing, back to her core belief in patient-centered care. …
