Ian Short indicates a dual purpose to this edition: to provide a linguistically more authentic record than has hitherto been available, and to make the Oxford Folie Tristan more readily and widely accessible. The second aim is perhaps the less important, for this text, unlike certain others in this admirable series, has enjoyed the benefit of previous scholarly editions. True, those of Bédier and Hoepffner are now out of print and made on outdated interventionist principles, but there have been other editions which have kept knowledge of the poem alive. Pauphilet's modernized-text version in the Pléiade Poètes et romanciers du moyen âge remained in print for a long time; Payen's edition of the French Tristan poems in the Classiques Garnier series, idiosyncratic though it may be, was first published in 1974 and reissued in a revised form in 1989; and in that same year Philippe Walter produced his edirion of the Tristan tales in the Livre de Poche collection. So, the potential value of this edition lies not in its accessibility (the volume is available only to subscribers) but, rather, in its reliability. …
